The Driving Instructors

Flying Colours' Principal is Dave Adams, a highly experienced instructor and ADI Training Officer, who has coached and guided learner drivers, trainee driving instructors and qualified ADIs to success.

The following is a brief summary of Dave’s qualifications and achievements:

Prior to Flying Colours, Dave was a senior training officer for a major national instructor training establishment and driving school. He was simply required to deliver training of the highest quality at all levels of experience, from learner drivers to ORDIT registered trainers, many of the latter who are now delivering training themselves for various companies nationwide.

In addition, he has enjoyed a high success rate preparing candidates for check tests and advanced driving tests such as The Cardington “A Test” and The Diamond Advanced Driving Test.

All our instructors take pride in their professionalism and have some of the highest pass rates in the UK. As a Company we are constantly appraising their standards. Because our instructors are so highly skilled you should find that you will require fewer driving lessons to pass your driving test - saving you money.

Our aim is to ensure that standard of instruction is kept high, giving a professional and caring approach throughout your lessons. Our objective is for you to become a safe and confident driver on the roads today, that the fastest possible progress is made to driving test standard and to pass first time.

You will find all our instructors to be patient friendly and encouraging - we do not shout at our pupils !!

Learning to Drive

Provisional Driving Licence

You need to apply for and receive your provisional driving licence before starting to learn to drive. To apply for this, visit the DVLA. Or you can obtain the form D1 from your local Post Office. It takes about 3 weeks for your application to be processed and for your licence to be sent to you - so if you want to start learning as soon as you are 17, make sure you apply early. (You may apply 3 months before your 17th birthday).

The Highway Code is essential reading for everybody learning to drive. It contains all of the rules and regulations that relate to driving in the UK. It is a good idea to read this and study your road signs before your first lesson.

The next step is to start your lessons - this is where we can help!! How many lessons will I need? This is a question we are often asked and a very difficult one to answer it can vary between as little as 20 hours (with lots of extra practice) and an average of 43 hours sometimes with extra practice sometimes without, very much depends on you personal ability.

The Theory Test

The Theory Test has two parts: the first is a multiple choice section consisting of 50 questions and you need to score a minimum of 43 to pass. The second part is a Hazard Perception test where you are shown fourteen video clips showing various hazards (one clip has two separate hazards) and you will score a maximum of 5 points for each hazard decreasing with the length of time it takes you to respond. The maximum score is 75 and the pass rate for learners must be at least 44. You will need to pass both parts to successfully complete your theory test. If you pass one part and fail the other, you will l fail the whole test, and will have to take both parts again.

The theory test is taken on very simple easy to use computers. You can buy a 2 Pack CD Rom with all the theory questions on one disc and a disc with hazard perception clips to help you prepare. This is produced by the DSA.

The theory test is taken at a separate test centre to the practical driving test and must be passed before you can book a practical test.

You can book your Theory test through the DSA (Driving Standards Agency) website or by telephone on 0870 01 01 372.

Lets assume you have had all your lessons and both you and your instructor agree that you are ready to take your practical test. You need to apply to take your test with your local DSA Test Centre. You can do this online from the DSA website or by telephone on 0870 01 01 372.

The Practical Driving Test

Before you do any driving you will be asked to perform an eyesight check and then be asked some vehicle safety questions. You will then be tested on your general driving ability, including two reversing exercises and maybe the emergency stop (only one in three pupils are asked to do this).

The 'Driving' part of your test will last approximately 40 minutes. Throughout the test your examiner will be looking for evidence you have reached a competent and safe standard of driving.

You can make up to 15 minor driving faults and still pass the test, but 16 or more minor faults results in a fail. However, if you commit just one serious or dangerous fault, you will fail the test.

You must bring the following items with you to the test. If you don't, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) may refuse to carry out the test and you may lose your fee.

It is a good idea to also bring your letter of confirmation regarding your test time and date in case there is a query.

Testimonials

Gareth Morris, Wirral

The training and support provided by Dave Adams throughout the training has been first class. Dave is an excellent trainer and has provided many valuable insights into both training pupils to drive, and the necessary approaches and knowledge to pass the ADI examinations. Dave is a credit to the industry.

John Hearnden, Southport

Thanks Dave for your expertise and advice. The training provided by you was second to none. You created an ideal learning environment in which to teach those practical skills and techniques required to practice as a Driving Instructor. I have now had the opportunity to put these skills into practice in the real world and they have served me well.

Carol Roche, Liverpool

Thanks Dave. You were very professional, honest and knowledgeable throughout. I took a lot away with me regarding my future career.

Dave Kent, Preston

I found the training exceptionally well structured, very informative and delivered in a relaxed and comfortable manner. Thanks again, Dave.
